About

Manman Huang is a contemporary painter based in Maplewood, New Jersey, working primarily in watercolor and oil. Her practice draws on her background in sociology and history — including research into 19th-century Chinese-American trade — to examine how identity, belonging, and collective memory are shaped by displacement, community, and time.

As a self-taught immigrant artist, Huang approaches painting as a space where personal history meets broader cultural narrative. Her expressive brushwork and vibrant color construct visual landscapes that move between documentation and feeling — rendering familiar environments as sites of memory and meaning. Her ongoing Maplewood Towns and Gardens series reflects on how place holds emotional and communal resonance for those who arrive, settle, and build belonging.

Huang’s engagement with cultural identity extends beyond the canvas. Her signature zodiac ink works have been featured in Lunar Fest NJ, connecting her studio practice to the living traditions and visibility of Chinese and Chinese-American communities. She teaches watercolor in Maplewood and is actively involved in community-based arts initiatives.

Her work has been exhibited at museums and galleries across the tristate area, including the Newark Museum of Art, the Montclair Art Museum, NJ Arts Annual, Rutgers University Newark, Paper Mill Playhouse, Adirondacks Nationals of American Watercolors and Artsy.net. Her work is held in private and public collections. Huang holds degrees in sociology and history.
